Aloha, visitors. Hawai’i travel policies and procedures change frequently. Always check the Hawai’i Safe Travels site for the latest information. Mahalo for your support.

Traveling in the age of Covid-19 is an uncertain proposition, but more and more travelers are looking to plan safe vacations.  Traveling is always a personal choice, but the backdrop for that choice in our current situation is complex.  As you plan, consider a vacation rental as your accommodation upon arrival.  A vacation rental is the ideal place to plan physically distanced, safe vacations.

7 Ways to Plan Safe Vacations:

Choose Self-Contained

Vacation rentals are a natural fit for physical distancing, because they tend to be self-contained.  There is no lobby, no line at check-in, and often fewer internal hallways, or shared elevators.  Instead, once you move into your vacation rental, you are likely the only – self-contained – group to share the space.  Most offer contactless check-in via keypad or lockbox, as well as phone concierge support, rather than a high-touch desk area.

Maintaining Cleanliness:

In an age where many travelers pack an entire piece of luggage devoted to hand sanitizer, masks and disinfectant wipes, cleanliness is a top priority. While both hotels and vacation rentals are meeting strict standards for cleaning before guests arrive, a self-contained style of lodging is easier to maintain your desired level of cleanliness. They tend to include mops, sponges and other cleaning supplies that you won’t find in hotel rooms.

Grocery and Food Delivery:

Safe vacations must include food, of course. You can have groceries or food delivered to a hotel room, but it’s a much more manageable proposition in a setting that has a dining table, refrigerator ,and stove.  Delivery (or take-out) of food is a great way to support local businesses, enjoy local cuisine and still maintain a safe, physically distanced environment.

Outdoor Fitness:

Maintaining physical fitness is an important aspect of safe vacations for many travelers. Vacation rentals are less likely than hotels to rely on indoor fitness options – like treadmills and elliptical machines.  Instead, most offer access to walkable grounds and/or neighborhoods, private or semi-private pools, or tennis or golf courses (both of which are routinely cited as safer outdoor sports).  Vacation rentals are also likely to have a bit more floor space for that Zoom Pilates class you find yourself addicted to after months of staying at home.

Outdoor Activities:

Most preferred activities in Hawaii are, by nature, outdoors, and nearly all large events have already been canceled.  Most visitors to Hawaii know very few other people on-island, they are likely to engage in outdoor activities with members of their travel group.  And some of these activities – like uncrowded boat rides, shopping at outdoor markets – with masks, or hiking in national, state and county parks can help contribute to the Hawaiian economy as well.

Onsite Activities:

Safe vacations can also include just staying put. Many vacation rentals offer stunning mountain and/or ocean views. In addition to the above-mentioned access to pools, tennis courts and golf courses, some vacation rentals offer foosball tables, ping pong, or even a volleyball court.

Vacation Essentials:

No matter what the backdrop of world events looks like, you are likely always looking for these three vacation essentials:  safety, comfort, and ease.  Month after month, year after year, Hawaii vacation rentals can provide you with these essentials.  Vacation rentals are, by nature, your uncrowded, self-contained, home-away-from-home.

And no matter where you are in the islands, sunrise and sunset are always a safe, accessible activity – bonus if enjoyed with coffee (or s’mores!) on your vacation rental lanai.
